-=PCTechTalk=- Re: Migrating XP Pro to a new computer

Don,
What OS is currently on the new system? In answering your question, I am going
to assume none and also assume you have the Win XP Pro disk. Install XP Pro on
the new system by inserting the Pro disk in the CD Drive and booting the
system. If asked to boot from CD say yes or whatever the instructions say.
Mine says to press any key to boot from the CD. Follow the instructions to
install the OS onto your new system. At the Product Activation section you may
be required to call for activation. Inform the call center operator that you
no longer use the old computer and are putting Pro on your new computer. The
call center operator will give you new numbers to type in to the activation
window. Let the OS continue to install. If your old system works well enough
and you want to transfer your setting and so forth, run the transfer settings
wizard. When you have the settings transfered to your new computer, format the
drive on the old system to take Pro off it(if the old s
 ystem
works well enough for you to do so). If you cannot or do not want to transfer
settings to the new computer, format the drive on the old system to take Pro
off it. Recycle the old computer and you should be done and good to go and in
compliance with Microsoft's license for the operating system.

I replaced my old computer that has a "full" legitimate version of Win XP Pro
installed. The computer is for all practical purposes kaput. I want to remove
XP from the old computer and install it on the replacement computer.
Does anyone know of any tips, tricks or problems I might incur... especially
with the Product Activation process?

Thanks,
Don
