Rocky,
It sounds like three possibilities.
Heat Issue
Ram Problems
Or a Worn out battery.
You might have to take the laptop apart and make sure
all the dust is blown out and the fans work.
Also check the bottom of the laptop for specific hot
spot areas.
Try and see if the laptop can run on AC power without
the battery.
Swap out ram and see if that fixes the problem.
When you run DOS on the laptop it does not stress any
components so the fault is never triggered.
When running an OS or installing an OS this uses more
resources. Creates Heat, hard drive spins up more
draws more current from the power source.
Also windows uses more more ram than DOS and the fault
may be in there.
I would check with the previous owners and see if they
replaced the hard drive and/or upgraded the ram.
Instead of tossing the laptop, use this a learning
experience.
