Welcome to computers and to the group!

Hibernate was created specifically for people like you.  When it first 
appeared in an earlier version of Windows there were lots of problems with 
hibernate and other power management features.  It is my understanding that 
those problems are gone in XP.

Use hibernate.  It will not harm your computer.  If you have any problems 
with it post your questions here.
