That's true, and SP3 has most of the updates up to the date SP3 was released, so if you are installing the individual updates, then you are installing them again when you install SP3. If you install SP3 right after installing WinXP, then there is a lot less updates to install. I prefer to do the slipstreaming that Sandi mentioned, but I take that a few steps farther and slipstream all the other updates also (the ones released after SP3). I even include drivers from driverpacks.net so once my WinXP install is complete, I have all updates and the latest drivers already installed. I'm fairly sure you know that a fairly high percentage of WinXP installs are quirky (I'm not going to even mention other versions of Windows). If I notice anything that makes me nervous (like a program not working or the system locking up) in the first couple of hours, then it's simple to reformat and reinstall again. Below is where I get the updates I slipstream. Its updated every month, after that months' patch Tuesday: http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7184 (you do also need SP3 from Microsoft) Slipstreaming and customization is fairly easy with a couple of free utils like nLite and Siginet's RyanVM Integrator: http://www.nliteos.com/ http://siginetsoftware.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=9 There is also tons of info and links to silent installers for many freeware programs at RyanVM and MSFN: http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/ http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/ http://www.msfn.org/board/ And I get the drivers from Driverpacks.net: http://driverpacks.net/ Ed -----Original Message----- From: pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of bookworm54 tds.net Sent: Wednesday, February 17, 2010 11:33 AM To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: Just an observation (Windows XP-ish) Larry, The last time I formatted, my son told me to go to the MS site and download SP3, and burn it to an ISO disk, and install. If you have SP3 you don't need SP2. This is much easier, faster and probably safer.
