"Normal" (whatever that is!) is +usually+ whatever is most comfortable for 
you. For me, it is just a little brighter than the middle settings. For 
dark photos, I make it brighter and go back to "my normal" later. Seeing 
the photos in bright mode tells me if I want to do some touching up on the 
photos or not.

Some of my customers wanted it as dim as possible, saying that was best for 
them, others so incredibly bright we had to turn it down temporarily to 
work on.

HOWEVER, if your monitor is dark and you are unable to make it brighter, 
then I would wonder if power supply to your monitor is failing. My monitors 
never last as long as my TVs. I can expect to replace my monitor about 
every two years and my computer about every four.
