You steered me in the right direction. I went to tools > Internet Options >
on the general tab located browser & clicked on settings & there was the
option to disable.

Jan,
It sounds like you just updated IE from version 6 to version 7. 6
doesn't have the ability to do tabs, but 7 has it as one of its main
features. If the tabs can be turned off (and I'm sure they can), the
control would be somewhere in the Options area. I'm not running 7, so I'm
only guessing that the options can be located under Tools > Options, just
like version 6.
