<snip> Too often this tangent research goes down a road that
common sense already has the answer too, which actually hurts genuine
research.</snip>
Unless we have access to the whole research project, it is only
conjecture
that it is or is not of value, on my part, too. Unless the press picks
up the true intent and publishes the boring details along with the
catchy
public interest tidbits like this, we will never know. I agree that
foolishness
abounds. . .but it abounds in darned near every field of
study/work/endeavor.
I just can't condemn it without all the facts.
And yes, I have some prejudices myself. I work, as a volunteer in
EMA/Homeland Security. I see an awful lot of dedicated fire/law/EMA
personel putting in 50-60-70 hour weeks on a salary that stayed the
same even though their workload doubled. I have a second prejudice in
that my youngest daughter is a bio-chemist in a public facility who
lives or dies,
so to speak, in the grant mill. Should everything be funded? Probably
not,
but because of serendipitous events that were the unplanned outcome of
research projects we have things like Super Glue and the glue that the
used to bind my surgical incision when my broken neck was plated up.
[The purpose of the research was for medical glue.]
As I said, perhaps I should not have spoken up without all the facts.
I am sorry that anyone suffers from this disorder expecially the family
of someone I hold in high regard as I do you. My principal put me
in a refrigerator box in her office for a whole year thinking that I
would
learn if only I weren't "distracted." My mother actually signed my
report cards with "if you would beat her, she would . . . ."
My son fared a bit better than that, but when you combine ADD and
dyslexia
it compounded the problems our family faced. Thankfully my two
daughters
were spared in this generation [both hold Ph.ds] while my son hops from
job to job after barely finishing highschool.
I went back to college at age 49 and graduated as valedictorian,
[only a 2-year degree] but I had a disability counselor and
tons of help with learning aids like that didn't exist when I was a kid.
. .like
large print books with colored overlays since white paper is a major
factor in my type of problems. I even had a portable screen overlay for
my computer.
I do hope and pray that you family has adequate IEP planners.
It makes the quality of life so much better for everyone.
I sincerely enjoy the interchange of ideas here and I beg the indulgence
of
anyone who is put off by the OT discussions.
