-=PCTechTalk=- Re: Interesting Phenomenom

Geekette,

But what did the research prove? This is the same type of research that
proved that people can recognize word spellings with certain letters
withheld. The basis of that research led to a fad in the 60s called
"speed writing". It proved only what has been known all along. I'm not
saying that there isn't any good of the major part of the research, but
this subset proves what many humans know all along. That once a word is
learned, people can recognize it with misspellings and even incorrect
letter order. Too often this tangent research goes down a road that
common sense already has the answer too, which actually hurts genuine
research.

I have nothing against research that truly helps such things as
dyslexia. I have numerous family members that have it. I've seen my
cousins struggling like h*ll with it. They failed grade after grade
until some teacher correctly diagnosed the disorder, and they got help.
They weren't stupid, all went on to college and maintained a 3.0 or
better while working full-time.

Dave

<snip> Misspelled words are easily interpretable.
The fact that someone not only did this research, but that someone
okayed them to do it speaks volumes about what is wrong with the
research industry as a whole. Wasting time on something like that
versus an actual viable contribution to the betterment of society, I
believe speaks to incompetence. Imagination has nothing to do with
it.</snip>

I beg to differ, politely, of course. . .this research came out of
research on how people learn, or fail to learn, word recognition [and
other reading skills]. As a person with dyslexia who nearly failed the
first three primary grades, and the mother of a child with dyslexia, I
am delighted that research like this goes on. . .it gives me hope that
my grandchildren, if they inherit the disorder, will have the benefit of
research that will improve their lives.
