I read a story a couple of years ago AOL tried to get Trillian to stop using
their messenger
I haven't used Trillian for awhile now that most of my contacts now all use
the popular
MSN Messenger but I think the aim feature still works though you'll have to
ask those
who still use Trillian...

Trillian and AOL battle over IM access
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEWS
A battle has been evolving for some time now over the use of Trillian to
access the AOL Instant Messaging (AIM) system. On Tuesday, Cerulean Studios
released version 0.72 of its popular instant messaging client known as
Trillian. Almost immediately users started reporting problems connecting to
their AIM accounts. Cerulean stated that by turning off the "SecureIM
capabilities" that the problem could be avoided.

However, that wasn't the end of it. Even after the alleged "fix" was first
posted, AOL again attempted to stop Trillian's use. Cerulean Studios again
released another version of this software with fixes in place to allow
connection to the AIM system. Version 0.721 of Trillian is now posted as the
latest working version of the software.

Trillian is an all-in-one instant messaging client. It allows users to
connect to various instant messaging services, including AOL, ICQ, MSN
Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, and IRC with a single interface. The software
is freeware and is funded simply by user donations. Unlike other instant
messaging clients, Trillian is "ad-free." Cerulean has already drawn about
one million people to the software.

AOL is claiming that it feels that the Trillian software falls into the
arena of a hack or intrusion into its system. AOL spokeswoman Kathy
McKiernan was quoted on CNET as saying "... that when a service unleashes
software that hacks into our system, and endangers the security of our
system, we stop it."

AOL is not showing bias against the software developer, as in the past it
has attempted to thwart any third-party software from accessing there
system.

ROMAN'S OPINION
I am a big fan of the Trillian software and I use it to access my AIM
account. Fortunately, it appears as if AOL has only been able to block new
versions of the software. I never upgraded to version .72 and my current
version .70 has never had a problem. [Rob Note: I was using version .71 and
was blocked off of AIM--I upgraded to 0.721 and it's working now.]

This is the type of software that most end users really like to see. It's
functional, skinnable, and able to connect to multiple IM services; best of
all, it's free. Cerulean accepts donations through PayPal and Amazon for the
work it does. I also like the fact that the software is "ad-free." With the
size of the user base that Cerulean has (about 1 million), it could probably
make a few bucks by incorporating ads into the client; but it does not. I
give the execs credit for that.

Being that Cerulean receives its funding from donations, I am sure that this
requires it to be more responsive to its users' needs. If the software
doesn't work correctly, the company probably won't get the donations it was
hoping for. So far Cerulean's done a good job of this, as it has released
fixes shortly after AOL attempted to lock out its service.

AOL isn't making any friends with this one--it looks like another instance
of the giant attempting to squash the little guy. AOL's going to the extreme
in the instant messaging war. It looks like it's going to be a long,
continuous battle for Trillian if it wants to continue supporting the IM
service. To Trillian, I say, "Thanks."

Sir Troth a while back you posted a link to an IM that works with all
the services. I think it was called trillion but not sure. Would you or
some other nice person post it again. I've been going over the old posts
but you know how it is, You can never find something when you want.
Thankls
Steve
