Don, This is not entirely true, "Wal-mart plays by the same rules as = everybody else." Walmart plays by its own set of rules. Out here in = California, they got a ballot measure in a local election so that they = could build in a location without doing the requisite environmental = impact and traffic studies that every other business must do in order to = build. (Fortunately, the voters told them where to stick it). I have also seen Walmart use its resources to take losses on most items = to force a competitor out of business, then once the competitor was = gone, raised its prices higher than the old competitor had been. Started right off as full-time. Most benefits are = available to part time employees. Including Health Insurance. Benefits are great! I get an extra 15% of what I contibute per payday = in=20 company stock just for buying Wal-mart stock on the payroll deduction = plan.=20 Plus I get an employee discount on purchases (except most grocery = items).=20 That averages another $10 a week. Customers abuse the generous return policy! Every store has loss leaders to get you into the store. Every store has = merchandise priced higher than their competitor. Especially grocery = stores.=20 The local Publix market sells Nature Valley granola bars for $2.89.=20 Wal-mart price is $1.98. I challenge you to make a shopping list and do = some comparative shopping. What you might save buying loss leaders at = one=20 or two other stores will be lost in the cost of time and gas to do all = that=20 driving around. In my market area, the local newspaper shopped four different stores...=20 Wal-mart, Publix SuperMarket, Albertsons Supermarket and Winn-Dixie=20 SuperMarket. Wal-mart beat them all by at least $10 on the cartload of=20 groceries. Wal-mart price matches any competitors advertised price. I do not buy computers or expensive electronics at Wal-mart because they = do=20 not sell extended warranty plans like Dell or Circuit City does. Unflattering exposes have been done on other retailers and employers. = In=20 any large company you can find enough unhappy employees and customers to = do=20 one. Nothing new. Nothing different. Nobody wastes their valuable = time=20 and resources refuting them. I have not heard any complaints about non-payment of workman's comp. It = is=20 just as expensive for Wal-mart to fight a W-C case as it is for an = employee=20 to fight it. Possibly more so since corporate lawyers draw HUGE per = hour=20 fees. It would seem reasonable to me that for most injuries it would be = cheaper to pay the claim than to fight it. Wal-mart plays by the same rules as everybody else.
