Wow....it's amazing what I DON'T know LOL But....I'm glad you cleared this up, cuz I wouldn't want a newbie reading what you wrote and thinking "cool. No typo, linny poo. Sure, formatting can be disasterous for most of us but it doesn't mean the data is wiped out. Formatting does not erase data. You just don't see it. A copy of the FAT tables are made when you do a regular format and with the right tools, the data can be recovered. Unformatting was common in Win 3.1 with Dos 6.22 which contained the unformat utility. unformat c: /l would do it and show you all the files and folders on your formatted disk. I remember a Windows problem I was having with video and even formatting -reinstalling didn't fix it. Then it hit me that nothing was really getting wiped out, so I did an unconditional format - format /u - which formats without making a copy of the FAT tables, and that fixed the problem. vic http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WinTips-Tricks/ Lock and hide folders with maximum ease and security. http://personal-computer-tutor.com/lh/lockhide.htm To unsub or change your email settings: //www.freelists.org/webpage/pctechtalk To access our Archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PCTechTalk/messages/ //www.freelists.org/archives/pctechtalk/
