-=PCTechTalk=- Re: Help with updating XP Pro

Thanks Don............I'll read thru these 2 emails and try to make a
decision.
This is a new pc, only maybe 5 weeks old now and it had some
updates done at the store I guess, or ??. It's an HP Compaq dc5800
that had previously been loaded with Vista and was downgraded
to XP Pro, but without the normal business applications like word, excel,
etc. Comp USA requested to have some XP machines to sell and like
the salesman told me, they left off the Microsoft business applications
to allow the purchaser to use their choice of business applications.
This is set up to be a business pc, it's extremely quiet and cool and it's
larger than most of them.............tons larger than my old pc. At this
point I don't need all those business applications so it's no biggie
for me. I did do what showed up as critical updates when I got it
set up, but I never clicked on that "custom" option, so I thought I had
everything critical and just hadn't done the SP 3 yet, but I guess not!

Well hang!! I use the address bar constantly..........I sure won't like
losing that ability!

Thanks so much for the help.

Sandy

ps. this is the link to the pc I bought, only I got it in Comp Usa.

Sandy,

I bet you love M$ almost as much as I do. Especially there dialog
boxes that say a lot without telling you anything you need to know.

In this case only:

#1 will download SP3 for Windows XP and all other critical updates but
none of the option software or driver updates.

#2 gives you the option to customize your download/install to include
SP3, any optional updates and of course all the critical updates. You
can pick and choose bewtween them all. OR you can elect to do a
custom download of all critical and optional updates for XP as if SP3
did not exist.

I have slipstreamed SP3 into 2 different install discs for XP Pro and
have run them both in a virtual machine to see how it works. So far,
So good. So far the only thing that caught my attention was the
removal of the addrss toolbar for the taskbar. That is no big deal
for me as I prefer to use the original Google Deskbar.

If you want to update to SP3 and - in the absence of a compelling
reason not to you should - I suggest you take option 2 and install the
second choice. Once that is done run update again and allow it to
install SP3.

Please note: If you have upgraded to Internet Explorer 7 and want to
retain the ability to uninstall it and return to IE 6 then you must
uninstall IE 7 BEFORE you install SP 3 and then reinstall after SP3 is
installed.

Almost forgot... the second option is a larger download because there
is more to download. With 104 updates for SP2 it must have been a
while since you last installed updates for it.

Don
