it could be as simple as a defective cable from your modem to the wall jack, or
perhaps someone has picked up a phone on that line. Usually with laptops,
especially ones that get hooked up and unplugged routinely it's the simple
things that fail.
Simply check the 'little' things first before tearing the system apart.
