Modern disk drives use Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology
(SMART), a standard procedure for checking on the physical health of the
disk and report potential problems.

When you boot the machine in the bootscreen you might see a line that goes
something like 'SMART capable but disabled' if it's turned off. You have to
go into the BIOS to change settings for it, On or Off. I have a third party
utility installed (SystemSuite) that will return SMART status, do a quick
SMART test or an extended one (takes ages for the extended one, it really
