Modern disk drives use Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART), a standard procedure for checking on the physical health of the disk and report potential problems. When you boot the machine in the bootscreen you might see a line that goes something like 'SMART capable but disabled' if it's turned off. You have to go into the BIOS to change settings for it, On or Off. I have a third party utility installed (SystemSuite) that will return SMART status, do a quick SMART test or an extended one (takes ages for the extended one, it really tests the drive) Here's a link with much more information. http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6255-5034871.html hth, zat ----- Original Message ----- From: "cris" <cris@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, January 29, 2004 7:28 AM Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: Help!
