My system has 1GB of RAM installed, the maximum it will hold.
I want to say it's FAT32 on the external, but not sure. I formatted it right
out of the box with the default, and I think it's FAT 32. I'm running XP
Pro.
And no, I haven't run CHKDSK or Defrag on the external, I don't even let it
go past the "Would you like to format it now?" message (I click No).

Tim,
That's a mighty large pagefile you've got there, but mine insisted on
being 1.00 GB (1,073,741,824 bytes), even though I have 2GB of RAM
installed. The size can be modified (it won't allow itself to be deleted),
but I'm extremely hesitant to advise you further on this until I know how
much memory you currently have installed.
It sounds like the MBR on your external has been fried, possibly by a
nearby lightning strike or some other source of a spike through your home's
electrical system. The MBR is responsible for keeping track of all of the
data on the platters. Without it, your drive basically IS unformatted.
However, this is usually easy to fix. Can you tell us what file system is
being used on that drive (FAT, FAT32, NTFS) as well as the operating system
that's installed?
Peace,
GMan
