may also be worth trying to boot the machine into dos, and then typing
c:\
fdisk c: /mbr
This formats the master book record on the hard disc, and does no damage. if
for some reason
the pc is having difficulty reading this, then it will give you a boot error.
This often fixes
it, if there is no hard disk problem.
Worth a try, as the machine will still boot of the c:drive after wards, and no
formatting and
reinstall of windows etc is needed.

Tammy,
I had hard drive failure on my old machine. I would constantly get the
"kiss of death blue screen" saying that the system could not write to the
hard disk, although I would hear lots of noise as it tried. Also, several
times on boot-up I would get the message that no hard drive was detected at
all. If I rebooted a couple of times, it would come back. I contacted the
manufacturer (under warranty) and had them ship me another one before it
went out completely. I spent the waiting period backing up everything.

What are the signs of a failing hard drive. Mine hasn't been making any
strange noises, but has booted a few times now with a message about "Disk
Boot Failure, please insert system disk and restart." I am running windows
