Formatting should be your last option.
things to consider (some already suggested others
may not)
Remove the scanner from the hardware listing and
remove all the scanner software and then reinstall
preferably letting windows detect the scanner if
possible.
Check for upgraded/updated drivers, also check the
scanners web site (http://www.mustek.com/) to see if
there is an documented known problems such as your
brand of scanner with a particular other program etc
Try a scan with everything else closed to ensure its
not conflicting with another program
Try the scanner on another computer
Hopefully that helps some. Also while you are at the
mustek site (http://www.mustek.com/) look around it
appears they have some handy and fun sections
(workshop/games etc)
