Those are called wigits or applets.   Many service programs like your Google 
search have such addon programs and most are not mallware, etc.  They simply 
are little programs that add value to the experience of using your original 
program.  Another example would be all the addons that are available for 
FireFox.  Occasionally, they are spyware, but from what you described, I 
suspect they are innocuous.  Try one out and see if you like it..........or 
delete them.  Your choice.
