-=PCTechTalk=- Re: GETTING RID OF XUPITER & INTELLIGENT EXPLORER

Go to Google.com and then type in Xupiter Removal or a variation of that
and you should get lots of hits because it is a problem. As far as
Adaware/Spybot, you only really need one of them, but I use both because
invariably one or the other will miss something. Adaware is more user
friendly and doesn't scan for some of the things Spybot does, so it is
marginally safer to remove items. Spybot is more thorough, therefore you
have to use common sense and educate yourself before you just hit delete.
It is pretty good at making suggestions as to the likelihood of why it is a
problem. Delete what your SURE you don't want and then ask somewhere or
Google anything else. Many times if you enter the problematic file name it
will turn up hits that will guide you on.

Backweb is a remote access/tracking tool. HP and other companies bundle it
into other software to be able to remotely access your computer or log
where you've been and what you've done, most usually ostensibly in the
interest of help or support. Some computer manufacturers use it for their
help systems. The bad thing is that it creates two problems. First, it is
usually bundled with something else. In mine it was in "HP Center" and
finding that program to uninstall it can be be hard. You have to uninstall
the program it's bundled with BEFORE you can get rid of it. The second
problem is that it offers *someone* a back way into your computer and, even
if well - intentioned, that can be compromised.

Xupiter is scumware and once you run Adaware you'll probably find more.
Backweb is more difficult, because it is a judgment call as to whether it
is a useful tool or whether it is a hidden exploit. IMO, since it doesn't
announce itself to the user or offer a way to uninstall it separately, it
is a spyware/trojan and unnecessarily tracks and reports a users
potentially private information. It tends to be used to target advertising
in many cases, so I believe that it isn't good.

          | Ok, read the response ( I have copied and pasted
          | both my request and your response below) but what do I do to
          | google and find the removal tool for Xupiter. Do I just go to
          | the website of Adaware and or Spybot and do a download. Do I
          | do both of them. Also what is Backweb. not familiar with
          | this. I still would like to know where these things came
from.
          | Thank you for your very quick response and for offering this
          | service to others. I really appreciate it very much.

          | Sounds like all that spyware is hogging your system resources.
          | If you have
          | HP, you probably have backweb. Xupiter is bad and you need to
          | google to
          | find the removal tool. Us Adaware (free) and Spybot (also
          | free) about once
          | a week to clean up the rest. You *can* recover the system,
          | but you'll
          | likely lose one or two of the nifty free programs that you
          | picked up
          | accidentally or on purpose.

          |
          | | Hello,
          | | In the last couple of weeks, I have somehow
          | gotten 2 more bars
          | | on my homepage. One is Zupiter and the other is
          | Intelligent
          | | Explorer. I do not know how they got there or
          | how to get rid
          | | of them. I can right click on an open area of
          | the bar and it
          | | will go away but when I turn my computer back on
          | again, there
          | | are showing up again. I did not ask for these so
          | how can I
          | | tell them to go away.
          | |
          | | Also, what can I do to increase my system
          | resources. When I
          | | connect to the internet, the resources go way
          | down. I have
          | | Win98 on a HP Pavillion computer. I am not a
          | computer whiz
          | | but have used computers for a long while now.
          | Any help would
          | | be greatly appreciated.
          | | Thanks to all and anyone
