Thanks for your input, everyone.
Actually, I found out what it was. I use the free version of Photobucket
quite frequently. They display rotating ads, and although most of the ads
on the site don't show on my browser (Firefox). the Circuit City ad did....
...big as life. Photobucket was up all day, and when I finally exited 
it, those
horrific pop-ups stopped.

BTW, I do have a pop-up blocker, and have never had a problem. I don't
know why it didn't work in this particular case.

Again, thanks a million. It's so wonderful how responsive all of you are.
