Sandi,
    When you C-A-D, click on the Processes tab to see everything that's 
running on your system behind the scenes.  If you can spot the offending 
item, you can click on it and then click on End Task to just kill off that 
process.  Your desktop should then reappear and you'll avoid the need for a 
complete restart/shut down.
