I expected the part about it not being so pretty afterwards.  The test was 
not to find a setting where it would work, but to find out if the problem is 
a lack of graphics power.  Had it worked, I would have recommended an 
upgrade to your graphics.

Check to see if the PCMService.exe file is running in the background. 
CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up Task Manager and look within the Processes tab for 
the item.  It's a long shot and I'm not so sure this would allow a one time 
through the SS, but it's a simple check to see if it's running.

I'm not convinced that the MS 'fix' you found in the forums applies to you, 
though.  The article discusses a SS that won't even start because the system 
refuses to idle.  That's not what's happening to your system.
