    That sounds scary, indeed!  But I can explain (at least most of it).

    Your screen lost everything because Explorer crashed (usually the result 
of having been asked to do too much without a rest).  I'm not talking about 
Internet Explorer or even Windows Explorer, those are just small programs 
that run within Windows.  In this case, Explorer refers to the GUI that we 
all have come to accept as Windows itself.  When THIS Explorer crashes, 
everything disappears from the desktop including the entire Start/Taskbar 
and Windows loses track of the icons in the notification area.  It will 
always try to fix itself, but the results vary depending on whether or not 
there were Windows Explorer windows open at the time of the crash.  If a 
window was open and it wasn't obliterated by the crash, you'll usually get a 
new window open up showing the contents of My Documents.  If there were no 
Windows Explorer windows open at the time, you'll get your Taskbar back, but 
many of the Notification Area icons will be missing.

    If you experience the one where the Taskbar doesn't return, follow your 
instincts and do a CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up Task Manager.  Click on the 
Processes tab and select/End Task any and all instances of Explorer.exe. 
Once they're all gone, go to File > New Task, type in 'explorer.exe' 
(without the quotes) and press Enter.  The taskbar will then reappear.  No 
matter how it recovers (or doesn't), the system will need to be rebooted as 
soon as possible.

I have no idea why WinPatrol had a fit, but I'm guessing it was a direct 
panic reaction to the oncoming Explorer catastrophe.
