Short addendum: 
This may not apply with the most recent builds (v1.0.3/4), but in the 
past, the Mozilla devs have advised against "overinstalling".

The preferred method is to remove your existing copy of Firefox via 
"Add/Remove Programs" in Control Panel, then reboot, and install a 
freshly-downloaded copy of the new version.

Your bookmarks, and all personal customisations WILL BE RETAINED if 
you install the new version into the same folder. I did it myself, 
this afternoon.

Bookmarks, etc. are stored in the profile folder, not Firefox's 
program folder.
