Thank you Rose for your reply.
I also think I remember ! that the person who used her internal drive just 
put the programmes there for storage to save uninstalling completely and 
having to download again in the future.
Some of the games I play are big files and I would like to get them off the 
hard drive while I'm not playing them for a while.
Am I making sense?

I only attach the external drive when I am going to use it.
Thanks also for the tip about rebooting before playing a game.
