Because only the name may be identical.  How would you feel if someone sent 
you a wonderful picture and it had the same name as one of yours.  It would 
overwrite yours because it's the same name.  But now your picture is lost 
forever.  It isn't comparing pictures, only names and it renames them to 
prevent accidental loss since people have a tendency not to be very 
original with names.  You send your mother a picture entitled Me.jpg.  She 
takes a picture of herself and sends it to you and she names it....Me. 
jpg.  If it didn't rename them, your picture would be lost as it would 
overwrite it with hers.  I hope that explains it for you.
