Hi Rocky,
How does the system react with everything other than CPU & RAM unplugged
from the mainboard? Do you hear any beeps to indicate that the BIOS is even
waking up?
Random thoughts while pondering the actual question:
You mention that the power supply is working, but was it actually tested
with a PS tester or multimeter? Even new devices have been known to arrive
DOA and a working PS would still provide power to other peripherals, even if
the CPU is fried. As far as the CPU heatsink being gunked up, things could
get to a point where it burns itself up, but most modern procs will shut
themselves down well before it gets to that point. They will then refuse to
run until their temps drop below a set point. Of course, enough heat will
dry up the thermal grease between the proc & heatsink making it impossible
to keep the CPU cool enough to run for any significant length of time, so
that may need to be refreshed.
Taking everything you've mentioned into consideration, the power supply
is the most likely culprit here since you said "nothing runs". If power was
being distributed at all, you'd at least see the fans spinning, hear some
activity within the hard drive(s) and be able to open/close the optical
drive's door. If all of these things do occur, then I would next target the
CPU. If those things occur, but the fans plugged into the mainboard refuse
to spin, I would instead target the mainboard. I just wish I knew more
about what's getting power and what's not.
Peace,
G
