I used to have a small program [the icon sat next to the clock]
which allowed me to show or hide the desktop icons. This
disappeared in a big w98 crash which I'm still struggling with
when the mood takes me.
Is there an app of this sort for xphome or maybe xp doesn't need
it if you know how to work it ??

No utility needed....
Right click on an empty spot on your desktop
Select Arrange Icons by
Select Hide desktop icons.

all I get on mine is - name - size - type - modified
then lower down - auto & modified
