-=PCTechTalk=- Re: Dell Reinstall CD (with a correction)

Hello GMan and Don

I think that I have come to the end of the road, with my attempts to use my
Dell XP Pro Reinstallation CD to "Perform a Repair Installation"

Though the CD contains a full and complete version of XP, it is an OEM CD
and, for some unstated reason, cannot be used for a Repair

Dell does sell normal (non-OEM) versions of XP at a substantial price, but
only OEM versions "come with", on the purchase of a computer. I say "come
with". I remember having to argue long and loud to get mine

Don, I have added Dell's to my list of less than useful tech. support
centres. The tech to whom I spoke said (I think - she spoke very quietly,
very fast and with a strong accent) that she could help me carry out a
Repair, but with no guarantee of not losing data. We never got as far as her
telling me how, i.e., using the CD or not, before I gave up

Thank you both and the others, who have contributed
David

Thanks for your suggestion, Don. I will give Dell Support a try, though I
have to say that I have not had much joy in the past with Microsoft, Gateway
and others. If any useful info. is obtained, I will of course post it here

David

This almost sounds as if you were in the format portion of the install.

If you have not already tried, contact Dell Support (I suggest either email
or live chat) from their Support page.

I am writing this offline as I am nowhere near a wi-fi hotspot at the moment
so I cannot provide a URL. www.dell.com or support.dell.com would be a good
guess to start at.

Don
