Whoa...there are several different filters used.   One is a filter for 
the phone outlet itself.  Another is a filter that's put on the 
connection for the phone to the house.  This connection is called the 
"D-Mark".   If you want the absolute best performance for a DSL line, 
run a separate CAT-5 line from the D-Mark directly to the modem for 
your computer.  Have the phone company put a filter on the other 
connections for the phone lines at the D-Mark.   The reason this is 
done is that every single phone line/appliance connected on the same 
line as the DSL connection will degrade the speed for your DSL 
connection...........so you separate all phones from the line to your 
modem.
