7.  You can partition the new external hard drive so your 
backups are on one
or more drive letters and your other 'stuff'' can be on other 
drive letters.
It is no different than the ones inside your computer.

Speaking of partitioning -- do you do this with a software 
program?


I'm afraid when this list was talking about it -- went over my 
head.  But now that I have an external drive I would like to 
partition it.  Would make life a lot easier when I back up (drag 
and drop) only some data files each night.
