HB,
You're absolutely right. Although it's really a combination of the
thick walls, the distance and the exterior air the signal must negotiate
before (not) reaching the garage. Hardwiring the router to the garage will
fix it and most likely boost the speed of the connection significantly as
well. A simple web search for "Cat5 wiring" will give you tons of returns,
but the link below might just be enough for your purposes. Heed any and all
of the cautions you find while researching this.

If your garage is a separate building from the house, take extra care to
make sure that the cable you run is never subjected to standing water (or
buried underground without protection). If there's already a phone line
running overhead from the house to the garage, tie this new CAT5 to it being
careful to not bind it too tightly. Ethernet cables are somewhat delicate
and should never be bent around objects or pinched by staples (or some other
means of tacking it to floorboards, walls and such on its way to the
garage).
Windows has everything it needs to make the new 'wired' connection to
the garage PCs. In fact, it takes less to make a wired connection than a
wireless one.
Let me know if there's anything else you need for this project.
Peace,
GMan
