-=PCTechTalk=- Re: Can't access websites

Hi Trevnal,
Yes that's right, after the reformat I have not installed anything but
AVG--no firewall yet and no adaware, just bare bones install. I just went
to the following website and read about this fix
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm  and hit a couple of other links from there;
one of them mentions adaware as a problem maker for Winsock. I turned off
AVG (but didn't uninstall it), and still unable to access sites. The thing
is, everything was fine until 7/3, the last day I rec'd the Times and
webshots. At the time I had Zone Alarm installed and I thought it might be
causing a problem. Also at that time I thought Spybot w/b a good idea, I
don't remember why. Anyway, I ended up trying to uninstall ZA which was a
big fat mess, no clean uninstall, also did a bunch of configuring on Spybot
and didn't know what I was doing, so there was another messy uninstall, both
of which caused me to have to reformat. I'm thinking, since others have
called Tech Support with the same problem, that it's a cable thing, but they
say it isn't. Now I'm wondering about this Winsock thing but am scared to
try it. That's a good idea to try my computer on another cable connection,
will try to find a friend who has cable, maybe this tech guy can tell me who
his friend is in my neighborhood. We did try to get the websites after the
reformat and before we installed AVG again, but no dice. Thanks for the
ideas.--Glo

Glo,

you say you have formatted the computer, and put everything back except
SpyBot?

Have you turned off any firewall and anti virus software since this problem
started? Also have you checked to see what is running also on the PC at the
same time?

It may be worth turning off as many things as you can ,and then see if you
can get on the net. If so, slowly turn them one, one at a time and try
again. You may want to reboot the PC each time also.

I am wondering if you have a program that is blocking everything, and needs
to be sorted out. May be the firewall or AV is corrupted in some way, and
needs to be removed, the computer rebooted, and then re-installed again.
But to find out, you need to see which one is the problem. Also can you
take your PC to a friends house, down the road and try it there? If it then
works, it is your machine that is the problem, and I would guess software
rather than hardware.

Just a few ideas you may or may not have thought of or tried.

Hi all, well it's the same old story, since July 3rd I've been unable to
access various websites, among them the only ones I really use regularly.
I'm still getting my mail from NY Times and Webshots, except I can't "get"
the mail because the links don't work. Also can only intermittently get
'google'--out of 10 attempts over a period of days, I might get it once.
I've had my new cable modem connection since June 17th and this problem
started on July 3rd. I've been in touch with Tech Support and they say
there is a problem in the route at AT&T. I've done several traces myself
and at&t is involved in all of them. Cable has sent a service rep to my
house to be sure it's not my connection (they've had this complaint from
others as well, so duh.) The guy told me everything is ok here, so it's not
the cable company's problem! So I'm wondering whose problem it is, must be
mine since I'm paying $30/mo and not getting any sites I'm interested in!
Anyway, he went down the street to someone else's house and tried my website
addresses and they worked, then he came back here and tried again--no go.
In the meantime, I came across this from Langa: "WinSockFix" works to
rebuild/repair part of the Internet connection plumbing that can be damaged
if Internet-enabled software is incorrectly or incompletely removed. These
days, the damage seems to happen most often when people use various
spyware-remover tools to rip out malware such as NewDotNet, WebHancer and
CommonName. More info: http://www.google.com/search?q=WinsockFix%2Ezip
After reading this, I checked this list's archives and saw my letter of 7/5
regarding the attempted configuration and subsequent removal of
Spybot--could this be the problem still, even though I've reformatted my hd
since then? And the problem started on 7/3, that was the reason for my
downloading Spybot in the first place, because all of a sudden I couldn't
get those websites. I s/h kept my dialup I guess, but too late now, I've
had the phone line removed and replaced by this superfast connection to
nothing. Sorry for the long post, but does anyone have any ideas on this?
I'm at my wits end (also can not get google to read more about Winsock
Fix). --Glo
