I guess depends on the cable company, they may have it set to only use a specific mode, their own modem, and that when you first connect with it it'll download new firmware. But, more realistically, you may be downloading software for the computer, if you need something specific to the cable company. Also... some cable companies want to register the unique MAC address of your modem, so that no one else can connect with your account. So, first time you connect any modem, if it's a MAC address that's not registered, it'll jump to a page that attempts to register the MAC address first. Where are you getting your info from, or why do you ask? ---Troth -----Original Message----- From: pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Cajun Sent: Monday, February 14, 2005 10:52 AM To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Cable Modem Provisioning Is it true that when a cable modem is first installed that a "provisioning" process takes place whereby software is downloaded to the modem from the cable company before the modem can communicate with the network, and every time you power up the modem, the network looks for this software? ) ( [_]? dj To unsub or change your email settings: //www.freelists.org/webpage/pctechtalk To access our Archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PCTechTalk/messages/ //www.freelists.org/archives/pctechtalk/ For more info: //www.freelists.org/cgi-bin/list?list_id=pctechtalk To unsub or change your email settings: //www.freelists.org/webpage/pctechtalk To access our Archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PCTechTalk/messages/ //www.freelists.org/archives/pctechtalk/ For more info: //www.freelists.org/cgi-bin/list?list_id=pctechtalk
