A simple uninstall of Norton's isn't enough usually.  It leaves pieces 
behind.  Also, are you running a firewall?  If so, that will conflict as 
well. When I first installed Avast, it kept butting heads with Norton's 
firewall which was supposed to be uninstalled but was still there.  I now 
run all installs through AShampoo so that when I remove something, it's 
totally gone...lol.  You may have to do some manual removing for 
Norton's.  I'm sure someone has a link for that.  I don't but I know it can 
and often does leave stuff behind.
