Maybe it was just their free online scan you had installed.  That is
available on their free stuff page below.  It probably installs a browser
plugin and a tray icon for fast access.  The online scanner should be safe
to have along with AVG, but I wouldn't recommend installing their non-online
anti-virus program because of the potential of conflicts.

Ed, no Registration info.  And I have AVG 9 Free.  I think I got Bit 
Defender from this list when there was a lot of concern about Conflicker. 
And maybe it was just the scan. I did not use it regularly but it looked 
kind of neat in my Notification Area!
Perhaps I should just bookmark the site.
