Roger,
I do not have that .BAK file on my system, but the NTUser.dat file is
always located immediately inside of your 'username' folder. When you ran
your search for the file, the results area should provide you with the full
path to this file (as well as any others by the same name), as you have
already stated. However, Windows is still set to hide all hidden files &
folders, you won't be able to find it when you go to that location. While I
included resolving this specific issue in my instructions (paragraph 10), I
can also understand how the directions for doing that could easily be missed
among all of the other information. On the other hand, I may be wrong about
the hidden setting and this problem may point to a different situation that
I am not yet able to visualize.

So, my advice, at least right now, is to double check that the hidden
option is turned off for all files & folders within Windows Explorer's Tools
 > Folder Options (as well as the other changes I suggested in that
paragraph). If it is (and they are), let me know and I'll attempt to
provide some additional direction for getting around this problem.
:O)

And yes, Safe Mode will not allow you to go online unless you have a
broadband connection AND you opt for Safe Mode (with networking) in the
bootup menu, provided that option is available.

Peace,
GMan
