-=PCTechTalk=- Re: Backup = Acronis True Image 11

Hi Roger,
I have not used the Clone feature of Acronis as I have
mutable drives to save the images on.

It sounds like your CDR had problems.

I have the same problem with the computer I replaced.
Although I did purchase a new LG brand internal CD/DVD/RW
fpr $30 CDN on line from http://www.ncix.com/
LG G-H20NS10 Black DVD+RW 20X8X16 DVD-RW 20X6X16 INT
SATA OEM DVD Writer 1 $25.99
Stock # 27454

My old CD\DVD\RW was dying at 40% written.

Many of the tweaks we used are found on one of
Black Viper's pages (he is an MSVP not a hacker)

Black Vipers Vista SP1 recommendations
"To continue my fine tradition of optimizing MS's latest OS,
I have here my findings to date."
http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm

He as some very good suggestions with several options
of what "Services" to allow.

The home page:
http://www.blackviper.com/index.html

One of the Tweaks the fellow helping me had was to
put a shortcut to "Event Viewer" on the desktop.

Each time we re booted he would check the error long to
see what problems there may be.
Then Clear the events before the next boot so we would
always have current info.

In XP Pro the "Event Viewer" is found in:
Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools

or Control Panel> Administrative Tools

I just shrunk the window till I had a portion of my
desktop exposed and held the mouse down on
Event Viewer and dragged it onto my desktop.

Another tip is to check your hardware in Control Panel>
Add New Hardware> Device Manager

Look for items with Yellow ! Exclamation marks.

Then try to find a fix.

One of mine was a series of ether net adaptors.

As my OS =Vista was preinstalled it had no problems

But in installing XP I had to download the XP drivers
for my hardware. I did not think to realize that non
of the mother board harware was installed.

Installing the Mother Board drivers from the
ASUS CD fixed 10 ! marks.

I have Clone d my drives in the past with Power Quest
Drive Copy. I would by 2 identical drives to do this.

I also clone d a smaller drive to a larger one on which
I had used Power Ques Partition Manager to resize the
partition I was cloning to was exactly the same size as
the one I was cloning.

PowerQuest R.I.P.
Symantec/Norton bought there programs and ruined them!
    In my personal opinion

PS: my recent "Acronis True Image" images were made to my
USB2 external hard drive.
Here in Canada, Costco has a Western Digital 500gig USB2
Passport hard drive on sale last week for $139.

I hope this helps.

GMan! and Mike!,

1. I wd also appreciate inf on the tweaks please

2. Have you tried CLONING to a separate HD and does ATI
partition/repartition it? (I only have ONE separate HD, so can't risk
trying)

3. I have been wary of doing a Restore of my (vanilla) Backup in case
there were any gremlins which would cause further corruption.

4. I have however tried to restore to a different location (partition)
so that I could Open and see how it came out, but as already reported it
asked me to create a path for a new folder, which I could not because
of the scrambling of my Reverse Solidus key (which appeared as #; as it
does now when I hit the key ......... # ...there!)

5. I have established a daily schedule of incremental backups which
seems to be working satisfactorily.

6. I have created a boot CD but it won't play; it tries to start and
goes whirrr/click pause, whirr/click pause etc etc

7. and in reply to GMan's question of Feb 27th headed "Re: Gman....
question about creating an Acronis image", you are quite right; I do NOT
have enough room.

Any help would be much appreciated
