Many thanks for advice

1. Will try reburning Boot CD; however, CDR drive HAS had problems 
before; I shall try to reinstall from my Rescue Disk, failing which may 
have to repurchase CD/DVD/RW

2. Will check out tweaks, thanks

3.  no Device Manager found in Add hardware, but in My computer>rt 
click.Properties>Hardware>Device Manager.  and NO yellow exclamation 
marks thankfully

4. Have installed  minimal Event Viewer on Desktop; now all I have to do 
is  REMEMBER to check and clear after each reboot

5. You are v.fortunate with Costco, because here in NZ my Seagate USB 
250 GB external was $250  = USD310.
