Thanks Gman my system is up to date and I have a fast cable connection.
It came through a group I belong to and I saved the zip but really wanted to
know
what it was and if it was necessary. Thanks for your effort in all the
informative links.

Patricia,
Unfortunately, AutoPatcherXP was shut down by order of Microsoft a while
back. The site is still there and you can probably find a copy of the last
pack they released, but it looks like the downloads page will never be
hosting a newer pack.

As for whether it was a good source, the answer depends on your
connection to the net. The update packs were huge, so I wouldn't have
recommend them for someone on dial-up. If you have a high speed connection,
however, it CAN be great. I say 'CAN' because the packs contained pretty
much everything.

For a complete list of what's included in the last release:
http://www.autopatcher.com/autopatcherxp

As you can see, it not only includes the critical updates, it also
brings along a lot of other items as well. For instance, it contains a lot
of recommended updates (including some you most likely will not need or
want). It also has some extra themes that can change the look of the entire
OS. Security and other types of utilities, as well as a bunch of registry
tweaks (improvements to networking, internet, system speed, etc.) can also
be had.

Of course, there are still some things to consider before jumping on it.
If your system is already up to date, you're going to be downloading a whole
lot of stuff you already have. These packs were originally intended for
folks who have just reinstalled their OS and wanted a simple way to get
completely updated in a hurry. Also, almost everything in these packs can
be downloaded separately as needed/wanted. Since the last pack is nearly a
year old, my suggestion would be to look over the list of included items,
research each one to see what it does and then, if you decide you'd like to
add it to your own system, download the latest version of it directly from
the MS site.

Peace,
GMan
