Here is what my friend sent me....
When it comes to the codec pack download the K-Lite Mega instead of the
Full. DO NOT install any other packs or there will be a conflict.
Download and install "Media Player Classic" ( Real Player Alternative). It
is an EXCELLENT player and I highly recommend it. I have yet to fine a
video format that is will not play, as long as you keep it up-to-date. Also,
there is NO add-a-ware, spy-ware, pop-ups or prompts. Just a great video
player, with on bs.
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm
Then from the same site download "Quick Time Alterative" from the left hand
column. When installing, just install the Quick Time codec because you have
already installed "Media Player Classic".
Now lastly, also from the left hand column, download and install "K-Lite
Codec Pack"... On the download page, download and install the "FULL" pack.
(DO NOT DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL ANY OTHER PACK, ESPECIALLY THE XP ONE. I have
tried them all and had problems and had to go back to the K-Lite Codec
Pack.)
Now you have everything you need to play all the different formats on one
player... "Media Player Classic". But remember, you must update the player
and codec. Suggest you check back, at the above link, every 2 or 3 weeks,
for updated on all 3...
Real Player Alternative( Media Player Classic ), Quick Time Alternative and
K-Lite Codec Pack(FULL). Also note: On the install of Real Player Alt. It
will ask you to un-install Real Player. This is up to you, you DO NOT have
too. On install of Quick Time Alt. it will ask you to un-install Quick Time.
Again this is up to you, you DO NOT have too. On K-Lite Codec Pack(FULL) is
may ask you to un-install old codec pack. This IS A MUST, un-install old
codecs and codec packs before installing new codec packs. You can install
up-dates on the player with out deleting the older version BUT NOT the
K-Lite codec pack. Un-install the old codec pack before installing the new
one.
Also, always install the codec pack last and re-boot your system after you
install everything. If by some reason there is a NEW format that will not
play( REMEMBER to check for up-dates every 2 or 3 weeks) K-Lite Codec pack
program will find them for you. You can tweak the player in the options in
the player. Open the player and click on "view" and then "options".
