-=PCTechTalk=- Re: AV - which to renew with

Both Norton & McAfee have taken wonderful products and created bloated
monsters out of them. They're slow, take up a ton of system resources and
are no longer able to keep up with the success rate of many newer AV
products available today, including many free ones. Their biggest claim is
tht they are a one stop shop for all of your security needs, but that claim
is only as good as the individual pieces (modules) allow. As a result, I
very much prefer to use different programs for different aspects of my PC
security.

AVG is a very good AV solution and the free version doesn't skimp at all on
that. The link below shows the difference between them.

The paid version includes additional modules that help guard against other
types of intrusions, but there are better solutions for those needs if you
don't mind running more than one security app.

It's already been mentioned that AVG has had some issues, most of which
appear to be related to not being ready for WinXP's SP3 update. But it also
appears that they're recovering from that snafu through updates, once the
user can get them to run. As a result, a new install using the latest
available version (one created after SP3 came out) shouldn't have any of
those issues.

To increase the abilities of ANY antivirus app you might choose, consider
running ThreatFire along with your AV. It's a heuristic AV program that can
catch most 0-day viruses before the AV companies have a chance to write new
defnitions and get them distributed to everyone.
