If the 'cylinder type unit' you refer to is an Orb fan and heatsink, 
those are basically crap, because they just don't cool well at all. 
Also, there has been some question as to whether the clamping is 
adequate for an AMD processor.  I'd chuck it and use the original fan 
and heatsink.

If the system will not boot up, remove the fan/heatsink assy and then 
remove the CPU.  Carefully examine it around the central chip to see if 
it is cracked.  Too much clamping force has been known to crack the CPU, 
rendering it useless.

Also, since you've been pressing on the motherboard and mucking about in 
the innards, so make sure all cards are properly seated and all ribbons 
and cables plugged in.
