You removed every scrap of the original post to which you're replying,
so I don't know who or what this is meant to answer (probably something of
mine lol). However, I have to disagree with his statement on a 2GB max
for XP. Golan may be the "Champions Of Azeroth" (whatever), but you're SO
right that he's dishing out only partial truths to his WOW cohorts. I
disagree with his 1st, the second part of the 3rd and his fourth point and
his "Edit" at the end is only good if the person's mainboard actually
supports PC2-8000 rated RAM. Also, the second statement isn't clear enough.
It sounds like he's trying to tell the person to avoid DDR2, but his edit
clearly suggests that type. This makes me think that the person does need
DDR2, but Golan doesn't want him to buy just ANY DDR2 that a salesman
suggests, which actually would be great advice if he would have explained it
better. Maybe he's trying to defeat this foe using hardware tactics?

So, perhaps a nutshell advisement is in order to clear up any remaining
confusion. :O)
The actual max is closer to 3.12GB of RAM (see link below), although 2GB
has most definitely been the 'sweet spot' for years. With memory prices
dropping so much recently (especially DDR2), that sweet spot is getting more
and more fuzzy all the time.
Specifically, if you only run typical apps on the machine (like the ones
that came with Windows plus maybe Office), stick with 2GB. Anything more
could cause a slowdown of the system since the OS has more RAM to look
through for every piece of data it needs. However, if you run
computationally intensive apps like video editors, CAD-CAM, 3D rendering
&/or high end games such as Crysis or F.E.A.R., the benefits of additional
memory will far outweigh the slight lag for simpler apps. So, at least for
the heavy users, their 'sweet spot' has moved upwards to 3GB and beyond.
I would be remiss (and I hate when that happens) if I didn't also point
out that app makers are contantly taking advantage of the most recent
advances in hardware. With the release of Vista over a year ago, the bar
for harder working hardware was raised significantly. The end result is
that, even if you chose to stick with XP, most types of the latest apps have
significantly higher system requirements. This trend is only going to
continue (like it always has), which means that 2-3GB will eventually not be
enough to open up your email. If Microsoft's next attempt at an OS
(currently dubbed Windows 7) isn't MUCH better than Vista, us XP and earlier
diehards are going to have to start seriously considering an alternative OS.
My semi-educated guess is that they already know this better than any of us
and will code the new one from scratch to make absolutely sure it's more
than acceptable to the masses. Unfortunately, they will also include some
things that make spying on our activities too easy (TCM and the Fritz chip),
and that bugs the heck outta me.
