Hey folks,
Many of you are aware that Babydoll and I have adopted many kitties
since we moved out here to the countryside. At one point late last year, we
even had 50 of the little critters of various ages. For anyone who doesn't
already know, our kitty clan is primarily due to drop offs (some already
pregnant, some who got that way before we could catch them, one was a box
with 6 unweaned kittens in it - sigh!).
Well, I hate the idea of making a public announcement such as this, but
with a seriously heavy heart, we've come to the understanding that our happy
household has been hit hard with the Feline Leukemia disease. I've buried 5
of our best friends in the last two weeks alone (bringing the total to 9 for
the year) and we're well aware that there's no cure. As time has passed
over the last couple of months, the number affected has been somewhat
rapidly increasing. That means it's just a matter of time before the
disease wears down the resistence of those who don't have a natural immunity
to it (a small percentage under cattery type places like ours) and then
moves in for the kill. As I'm sure you can imagine, we're absolutely
devistated, heart broken and a ton of other things no one could ever invent
words to describe. For those who may not already know, Babydoll is a
critical heart patient and I can't even imagine how going through all of
this is going to affect her health. To make things worse, I still have been
unable to find anything resembling steady work around here and my
unemployment is going to run out next week.
To ease the affected kitties' pain (and somewhat reduce ours), we need
to take them into the vets to be euthanized soon after they begin to exhibit
symptoms of this killer. Doing so will also help keep down the number of
pathogens so that the healthier ones can spend more time in this world
before it becomes their turn to 'return home'. As it is, we have several
that are starting to show signs of following the others, but at $30 per cat,
there's no way that we can afford to do the right thing to make their
transition easier for all involved here.
So, to come to my point, I'm hoping that anyone with the financial means
might find it in their heart to help us a little to get through some of
this. I really, really hate to even ask such a thing, but we're absolutely
at our wits end on how we're going to be able to handle this horror. If you
are able and you do choose to help, please reply privately. As a bonus,
you'll even learn my real name. :-}
Peace,
Gman
