Outlook Express Backup 6.5 from Genie-Soft
A week or two ago I wrote about how pleased I was with this product. That was
before I tried to access the dbx files with a third party utility.
OE Backup apparently stores the dbx files in a proprietary file of some sort
that is NOT kept in the message store folder. Or it hides the files in some
unknown location and rigs the registry to look there instead of the store
folder shown in OE.
I searched the computer for *.dbx and found some in different locations. They
were all a week or so since last modified. They should have been that days
date on at least some of them. I opened OE and moved a bunch of deleted
messages into an unused empty folder (dbx file size 75K) and went back to
search and find the set of dbx files with the dbx file considerably larger.
All were still the same size and no change in the modified date. I then closed
OE and searched for and deleted all copies of that folders dbx file. I then
reopened OE, the folder was still there with all the messages in it. I
searched the computer again and the dbx file is not there. Anywhere. Yes,
hidden, system and protected files are set to be visible in Windows Explorer.
I contacted the support folks and the reply I got was nothing more than a
reminder that I can buy the newest version for 20% off and can get a free
30-day trial by downloading . . . blah blah blah.
I hereby withdraw all favorable comments I made about Outlook Express Backup
6.5 and no longer suggest that anyone should use it or even download it. IF
(that's a big IF by the way) they should provide a valid answer to my problem
and identify exactly what happened to my mailstore I may change my mind. Don't
hold your breath.
I am now busy as a beaver trying to recover my dbx files. I'll let you know
what happens.
Please note: Outlook Express works fine. All my mail is there, it sends and
receives as it should, my rules work and so on. Just no access to the dbx
files and idea where they are or what happened to them. And I have no idea
what might happen if I use the software to move Outlook Express back to my main
computer.
