I'm planning to do a clean install of WinXp on a spare harddrive. I want to
take my time and do it right this time with all the security, privacy and
malware protection software installed BEFORE I start mucking around installing
other software.
I will partition the drive into three 50+GB partitions... one for XP, one for
Data and for possible use to install Win98SE in case I need it for some
peripherals that have never worked right in XP. (Is that possible, or do I
need to install both at the same time or 98 first?) Do I need a boot manager?
I want to stay as cheap as possible and still use good quality software.
Here's my list so far. I'd like your opinions and suggestions.
Win XP Pro
SP2
Drivers as required
Zone Alarm
Avast or AVG anti-virus
Adaware (Is it worth it to buy the full version?)
Spybot S&D
SpywareGuard
SpywareBlaster
WinPatrol
AI RoboForm (password manager)
Mozilla or Firefox
Thunderbird or Eudora
I haven't decided what to use for....
Pop-up blocker if the Google toolbar doesn't work in Mozilla/Firefox or its not
built in to the browser.
SPAM software (desktop, not server level)
If it uses a proxy will it interfere with the proxy the antivirus uses for
scanning in-out bound email?
Cookie and cache manager, a browser add-in or extension would be great since I
want to delete cookies and cache every time I exit the browser. Ability to
"whitelist" some cookies would be OK but not required.
Start-up manager. I have 512 MB of RAM and am disgusted at the amount of
"stuff" my system loads at start up. Something that will identify what a task,
service or application is and whether it REALLY needs to be loaded.
A replacement for all of the utilities in Norton System Works Professional.
I'll buy Norton if I have to, but free would be better.
When all that is installed I'll add the CD/DVD burner utilities and the system
service and support utilities that came with the computer.
Then, when everything is configured to be reasonably safe, secure and private
and a backup is made I will add other "stuff" one at a time, test it, burn it
in and make a fresh backup before I add the next item.
Have I thought of everything? Dumb question... of course I haven't. That's
why I'm posting this here... What did I forget?
And while I'm at it... does anybody know of a good utility that will seamlessly
replace the Windows Clipboard. I want to be able to cut and paste or copy
several times without losing the previous cut or copy. I'd also like to be
able to keep the various cuts in categories so I can find and use them over
again.
Thanks,
Don
