-=PCTechTalk=- Laptop help needed please

Hi,

A relative of my daughter-in-law, has a lap top that they have used hardly
ever. In 2 years!! Can you believe it?? I offered to give it a good
home...LOL. Well they wouldn't go for it and have decided to use it,
connect to the internet, etc.

It is a Dell Latitude, 128 mbs of ram, 4 Gig Hd dr, I am not sure about the
processor speed, I forgot to look. I suspect it is a Pentium 1 because of
how long they have had it and because they got it used from another
relative.

They called me over this a.m. because they said it looked funny on boot-up.
It insisted on booting up in safe-mode, so I knew there was a problem. But
I have never used or messed with a lap top at all. I was able to get it to
shut down correctly but when it re-booted again, it came up with the
desktop centered in the middle of the screen with about 3 inches or so of
space all around it. It was maximized, too!

I went into display properties and attempted to change the color and the
resolution. But it will only stay on 16 colors, 640x480 no matter what I
did.

Went to Device Manager...no red x's or cautions. However, they did show 2
monitors with the same specs, so I removed one of them. Rebooted. Same
problem.

At one point and I am not sure which of one of the boot ups we did get a
message that there was a problem with the adapter settings. She says they
never changed anything and that it looked ok a few days ago.

I hesitate to change anything more because it is not mine. At least not
unless I find out more than I know about now. I will dive in head-first on
my own, but not on someone else's.

Can someone give me a link or an idea of how to help them?

TIA,

USA Sylvia
