     Thanks for the tip.  I found out the update had not fully installed, if 
that makes sense.  In device manager, there was an exclamation point on the 
modem.  I was able to uninstall the update, and had to uninstall the original 
driver.  After reboot, windows detected new hardware, and I installed the 
driver.  So all is cool for now, and probably just made some brownie points 
with my 
significant other (she uses the laptop).
     But I think I will still have the original problem of the modem 
rebooting the computer whenever it feels like it.  Oh well, back to researching 
what I 
need to do.
