then I received this:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is about the new windows sp update.
and:
More from the newsgroups on IE Stationery.
The idea behind not allowing scripts to run inside of Outlook Express is
security. Period. Microsoft has taken heat (some justified and some not) for not
doing all they can to prevent attacks and viruses. Visual Basic Scripts like
almost everything in this world can be used for good things (like scrolling
stationery and other useful things) or bad things like email worms. It's a shame
that a few hundred who obviously are competent programmers can ruin it for a
hundred million but unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world.
There is no option to allow scripts to run inside Outlook Express 6.0.2900.2205
SP2. I doubt that they'll add that feature either. While we're sorry to see our
scrolling stationery not scroll, the stationery displays perfectly and works
perfectly. Some other stationery (created by Scrippy and other complex VB
scripting) fall apart in Outlook Express SP2 and are completely unusable. The
reason for this is we don't use scripting to hold the stationery together, we
use very basic CSS (Style Sheets) which are not executable (like VB or Java) and
therefore are safe.
We agree with Microsoft's decision not to allow scripts to run inside Outlook
Express because it means an end to the scripts that automatically run (such as
opening a browser window as soon as the email is open). Incredimail stationery
sent to Outlook Express 6.0.2900.2205.SP2 does not hold together either and is
filled with red-x's if the stationery uses images which are called from
Incredimail's servers.
We'll miss the scrolling too but we're glad we don't have to go back and dump
2000 stationery and start over. We're glad we kept it simple and used a very
basic scroll script.
Things may change by the final version of Windows XP Service Pack 2 but we
really don't think they'll abandon this change simply because the security risks
presented by allowing arbitrary code to run inside Outlook Express outweigh the
possible benefits.
You will have the option not to install SP2 but eventually most people will and
that means you could only send email with complex scripts to those who also
chose not to install SP2.
It's still early yet so we'll all have to wait and see what develops. I will be
receiving automatic updates to SP2 and Iwill post any major new changes here on
our forum.
